I Love Hip Hop in Morocco

A new documentary, I Love Hip Hop in Morocco has been hitting the film festival circuit and is on the verge of being released on the world. Soon.

The story begins with a group of Moroccan Hip Hop artists who share a single dream: to rock a professional concert for a hometown crowd. Unfortunately, resistance is strong in their society and resources scarce. And so begins the journey.
Featuring Moroccan Hip Hop artists like DJ Key, H-Kayne, Fnaïre, MC Bigg, Brownfingaz, Mot de Passe, FatiShow, this film delves into the "thoughts and dreams of the true future of the Arab world-- it's youth."

The Moroccan expat circle is a tight one and word of interesting projects spreads like rapid fire. It is no coincidence, then, that I had heard of this film a couple of years ago when I was living in Morocco and making cross-country road trips to hear concerts by these musicians. The two filmmakers, Jennifer Needleman and Joshua Asen began their project as an expansion of Josh's Fulbright research grant that studied Hip Hop in Morocco.

The more I think of it, the more I convince myself that I need to team up with friends and head back to Morocco, tripod and camera in tow-- I mean, just think about it: "I Love Moroccan Rugs"...???

Ok, ok, it obviously doesn't have the same ring, but I'm getting there! In the meantime, congratulations Josh and Jennifer and I can't wait to see your film!
